Ultimate 3-Day Zion National Park Itinerary for Families

Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure? This past week at the Resort we received a call from a guest stating they only had 3 days to enjoy their vacation and wanted to see what we thought about using those three days to travel to different national parks that are close like Bryce Canyon or The Grand Canyon. We told her that if you only have three days to visit there is no better place to fully experience than Zion!  Zion National Park is one of the most stunning destinations in the United States, and it offers something for everyone in the family. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Zion has it all. To make the most of your visit, we’ve put together the ultimate 3-day Zion itinerary, perfect for families. Let’s dive in and explore the natural beauty of Zion National Park!

Why Zion National Park?

Zion National Park is a paradise for nature lovers, filled with breathtaking landscapes, majestic red rock formations, and diverse wildlife. It’s a place where every turn reveals a new wonder, from towering cliffs to serene rivers. But what makes Zion especially great for families is its variety of activities suitable for all ages and fitness levels. So whether you’re hiking, driving, or simply soaking in the views, this 3 day Zion Itinerary promises an adventure you’ll never forget.

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Zion

Morning: Visitor Center and Pa’rus Trail

Start your 3 day Zion itinerary at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. This is your gateway to the park, where you can grab maps, get the latest trail conditions, and learn about the park’s history and geology. I remember my first visit here; the rangers were incredibly helpful, pointing out the best spots for our family to visit.

After getting your bearings, head out on the Pa’rus Trail. This easy, paved trail is perfect for families. It’s wheelchair accessible and offers beautiful views of the Virgin River and surrounding cliffs. It’s a great introduction to the park’s beauty and a fantastic spot for some family photos.

Afternoon: Zion Canyon Scenic Drive

Next, hop on the shuttle or drive through the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. This route takes you to some of Zion’s most famous landmarks. Make sure to stop at Court of the Patriarchs for a quick, easy hike with amazing views of the towering rock formations named Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

A must-see along the drive is Weeping Rock. The short, but steep, hike to Weeping Rock offers a cool, refreshing waterfall and stunning views. It’s one of those places where you can truly feel the magic of Zion.

Evening: Riverside Walk

In the evening, head to the Riverside Walk. This gentle walk takes you along the Virgin River to the mouth of The Narrows. It’s a serene way to end the first day of your 3 day zion itinerary, with the soft sounds of the river and the towering canyon walls around you. Afterward, head back to Springdale for dinner. This charming town offers plenty of family-friendly dining options. My family loved the relaxed vibe and the tasty local dishes.

Day 2: Adventurous Activities and Hidden Gems

Morning: Canyon Overlook Trail

Start your second day with the Canyon Overlook Trail. This trail is a bit more challenging but offers some of the most rewarding views in the park. Arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the sunrise. The sight of the sun illuminating the canyon is simply breathtaking. My kids still talk about the incredible views from this hike.

Mid-Morning: Zion-Mount Carmel Highway

After your hike, take a scenic drive along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. This road winds through tunnels and switchbacks, offering stunning vistas at every turn. Be sure to stop at Checkerboard Mesa, a unique rock formation with a checkerboard pattern. It’s a fun spot for a quick family photo.

Afternoon: Kolob Canyons

For a quieter experience, head to Kolob Canyons in the afternoon. This less-visited section of the park boasts dramatic red rock landscapes and tranquil trails. The Timber Creek Overlook Trail is perfect for families, offering stunning views without being too strenuous. It’s a hidden gem that lets you enjoy Zion’s beauty without the crowds.

Evening: Stargazing

Zion is known for its dark skies, making it an ideal spot for stargazing. Find a cozy spot, lie back, and marvel at the Milky Way stretching across the night sky. It’s a magical experience that the whole family will cherish. Don’t forget to bring a blanket and some hot cocoa for a perfect end to your day.

Local Tip: If you want to experience stars like you have never seen before make sure to go to the Checkerboard Mesa.

Day 3: Relaxation and Leisure

Morning: Grafton Ghost Town

On your final day, take a short drive to Grafton Ghost Town. This historic site offers a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved buildings and fascinating history. It’s a unique experience that adds a different flavor to your Zion trip. My kids enjoyed imagining what life was like for the settlers who once lived there.

Mid-Morning: Kayenta Trail

Next, explore the Kayenta Trail. This moderate hike offers solitude and beautiful views, connecting the Emerald Pools area with The Grotto. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy Zion’s natural beauty at a relaxed pace. We loved the peacefulness of this trail and the opportunity to spot wildlife along the way.

Afternoon: Zion Human History Museum

Spend your afternoon at the Zion Human History Museum. This museum offers exhibits on the park’s cultural and natural history, providing a deeper understanding of Zion’s significance. It’s a great educational experience for the whole family.

Evening: Enjoy A Family Dinner

A little-known secret about Zion is there is a wide selection of amazing food! The restaurants range from fine dining all the way to quick eats. Make sure to check out our favorite places to eat in Zion for some recommendations.

Where To Stay

After an adventurous day, unwind at Zion White Bison Resort. This luxury glamping resort offers a unique and comfortable stay close to the park. Enjoy the resort’s amenities, such as cozy tents, hot tubs, and stunning views. It’s the perfect way to relax and reflect on your amazing Zion adventure. My family loved the blend of luxury and nature; it was the ideal end to our trip.
